OIL STUDIES

Studio UpdatesLauren Phelps

Oil painting has always been one of my favorite mediums. While my traditional heirloom portraits are highly detailed, I wanted to explore a more intimate and less formal way to capture the beauty of childhood. From that desire, my oil studies on exposed linen were born. Painted alla prima, these works celebrate the harmony between the richness of fresh oil and the raw, organic texture of linen - timeless in spirit yet undeniably modern.

With a background in fashion, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for textiles, and I wanted to honor the linen itself by giving it a more prominent role within the artwork. These paintings, with their looser style and freer brushwork, embrace that materiality while allowing for greater spontaneity and expression.

This painting of my son is inspired by a candid snapshot my husband took at a café. I cherish it as a genuine moment suspended in time, complete with all the small, endearing imperfections - his flipped collar, rumpled shirt, and tousled hair. To me, this is the essence of childhood.
