I always begin with a subject or theme and go through a series of sketches and studies until I satisfactorily reduce or magnify the desired attributes. Abstracting forms or figures into simple geometric shapes or repetitions is a meditative and expressive process. I often layer paper, textiles, acrylic and oil paints or pastels to find the balance in texture, weight, and feeling. By painting and cutting all shapes freehand and no rulers or tracing or sketching is involved in my final works. This method allows the shapes, lines, and forms to realize a life of their own. The challenge of creating balance without a finalized or strictly drafted structure becomes a meaningful conquest in the process of achieving of the final work.
